I have to say that I wish more people would adopt sound dogs, which aren’t too easy to find in shelters anymore. Some people like to know: what kind of a background their dog has, what the puppy’s parents are like, the assurance of a healthy pet, have somewhere to take the dog when on vacation and know that if anything ever happened to them that the dog would go back to the loving household of their breeder. With a child on the way these things have become very important to me. On the other hand, there are good breeders and not so good breeders.
Keep in mind that the dog you are looking for isn’t just a dog with a certain set of physical traits. The dog you choose will have a temperament and that temperament will most likely be the deciding factor if the question of getting rid of your dog ever comes up. Please do not purchase dogs from breeders you do not highly respect, or purchase a dog because you feel sorry for it; this is how puppy mills stay in business. When you meet the breeder you will see how much they care for the well being of their dogs. Ask if they are involved in dog sports; many breeders take active roles in the dog world. I hope you will be able to find the dog that will be the right fit for your lifestyle, or that you will be flexible enough to become your dog’s dream owner with a healthy lifestyle filled with outdoor fun and cuddles by the fire.
I have not personally met all of these breeders or know them to be reputable. Please research the breeders and decide if they really deserve your money for what they are doing. With this page we can communicate to dog lovers what breeders are doing a good job and identify puppy mills. Please leave comments! You may also notice that I included breed specific rescue groups.

If you are going to buy from a breeder, make sure they are reputable breeders. Have the dam and sire passed the necessary health tests/exams required for that particular breed? Were the tests done at the appropriate age for the breed before their first litter or mating? Does the breeder require the buyer to sign a contract agreeing to return the dog to the breeder if for any reason you can no longer care for the dog? Is the breeder registered with the AKC? Reputable breeders do not want their pups to end up in a shelter–that is why a reputable breeder will take back a pup they’ve sold. Please do your research before you buy from a “breeder.”
I urge anyone looking for a family pet to adopt from a shelter or rescue. There are so many pure-bred dogs in shelters and through rescue. And seniors are the easiest to adopt and they adapt well to a new environment–what you see is what you get with a senior dog. Puppies are adorable and fun; but they take alot of time, hard work and patience to train and socialize. Please consider rescue!
Know any breeders that breed for longevity? Or breed for loyalty or being biddable? Take a look at this article from Science Daily on What Shy Dogs Can Teach Us About Longevity.
Here is a great excerpt from Hand Hill Border Collie’s Blog: “Gale started on Sunday afternoon, digging and being uncomfortable. She tricked me into staying up with her the entire night. Finally, around 9 a.m. Monday, she had her first pup. Gale went on to have four more. We had six pups that had been spoken for, leaving us one short. So I had a little chat with her and six hours later, after I had completely given up and was sure that she was done, she had one more for our friends, Don and Jeannie Helsley.”
This is how you know a breeder is doing wonders for dogs!
